Irish music star Bono found himself being told off by Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai when he presented her with a peace prize in Dublin from Amnesty International.
Malala made news headlines around the world when she refused to be intimidated by the Taliban who were trying to prevent girls from being educated. She spoke out against them and continued her studies.
They shot her in the head and she had to be taken to Britain for emergency treatment. Malala is now recovering but remains defiant against the Taliban.
Her bravery and her speeches in support of peace and tolerance have won her admirers across the world.
Controversial Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has launched a scathing attack on the music business in an open letter to American star Miley Cyrus. The letter was written “in the spirit of motherliness and love” after Cyrus said she had been influenced by O’Connor, and that her Wrecking Ball video had been inspired by O’Connor’s massive hit, Nothing Compares 2 U.
O’Connor says she is concerned for Cyrus and for what the music industry might do to her. She warns the young American star that music executives will exploit her for all she is worth and then discard her when she is no longer able to make money for them,
This is O’Connor’s letter in full.
I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today I’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares … So this is what I need to say … And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.
