Sadly the marriage only lasted 16 days. Things started to go wrong on their wedding night when rather than enjoying each other’s company, Herridge had to accompany O’Connor to a “place that was quite dangerous” so she could buy cannabis.

When they couldn’t find any she nearly bought crack. It was an experience that must have horrified Herridge who works as a drugs counsellor.

O’Connor ended the marriage on Christmas Eve because of the hurt she had put her husband through. She said: “The whole reason I ended it was out of respect and love for the man… he’s a drugs counsellor. What was I thinking?

“Then I was handed a load of crack. Barry was very frightened — that kind of messed everything up a bit really.”

Retirement from music

Her final album to date was released in 2012. How About I Be Me (And You Be You)? featured the single, The Wolf is Getting Married.

Sadly she suffered a breakdown and had to abandon her tour. She announced on her website that she was retiring from music because she was ‘very unwell’.

O’Connor wrote: “With enormous regret I must announce that I have to cancel all touring for the year as I am very unwell due to bipolar disorder. As you all know I had a very serious breakdown between December and March and I had been advised by my doctor not to go on tour but didn’t want to ‘fail’ or let anyone down as the tour was already booked to coincide with album release.

“So very stupidly I ignored his advice to my great detriment, attempting to be stronger than I actually am. I apologise sincerely for any difficulties this may cause,”

However, later that year she appeared on the Jools Holland show in the UK singing, Nothing Compares to U. O’Connor remains one of Ireland’s most talented yet troubled and unpredictable performers.
