The Holy Ground – lyrics and Chords

The Holy Ground is a very easy song to sing and play and is usually performed as a boisterous, foot tapping drinking song.

It is an old sea shanty sung by sailors as they performed their daily tasks aboard ship. The lyrics can be interpreted in various ways: there is certainly a lively, raucous feel to the words but they can also be sensitive as they reflect the feelings of sailors separated from their homes and their loved ones.

Luke Kelly and The Dubliners performed the song in D Major. The chords are presented here in the key of C Major – the same key used by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and more recently by the new stars of Irish folk music, the High Kings. We are sailing [Am]away from the [F]Holy [G7]Ground and the [C]girls we love so [G7]true.

We’ll [C]sail the [G7]salt seas [C]over ‘till we’ll re[Am]turn once [F]more,

[G]And [F]still I live in [Am]hope to see the [C]Holy [G7]Ground once [C]more.

(Shouted) Fine girl you are!

[C]You’re the girl that [Am]I a[F]dore [G]

Now when we’re out a-sailing and you are far behind
Fine letters will I write to you with the secrets of my mind,
The secrets of my mind, my girl, you’re the girl that I adore,
And still I live in hope to see the Holy Ground once more.

Oh now the storm is raging and we are far from shore;
The poor old ship she’s sinking fast and the riggings they are tore.
The night is dark and dreary, we can scarcely see the moon,
But still I live in hope to see the Holy Ground once more.

It’s now the storm is over and we are safe on shore
We’ll drink a toast to the Holy Ground and the girls that we adore.
We’ll drink strong ale and porter and we’ll make the taproom roar,
And when our money is all spent we’ll go to sea once more.
