The classic traditional folk songs that are still popular today thanks to a range of artists from Celtic Thunder to the Dropkick Murphys to Sinead O’Connor keeping their heritage alive.

Over the years new generations of Irish musicians moved with the times and have continuously created some of the worlds most loved songs whether it be pop, rock or folk.

How popular are Irish stars in other countries?

Earlier this year Billboard Hot 100 gave us details of which Irish artists Americans love most.

To coincide with St Patrick’s Day, Billboard created a list of the top 10 singles by Irish artists since its inception in 1958.

While the list contains many artists you would expect to see in the top 10, there are a few surprises, and a few surprise omissions too.

Check out the list and see the videos and Spotify playlist below.

1 U2 ‘With or Without You’
2 Gilbert O’Sullivan ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’
3 Sinead O’Connor ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’
4 Van Morrison ‘Domino’
