Wild Mountain Thyme lyrics and chords

The lyrics to Wild Mountain Thyme, or Will You Go Lassie Go as it is known to many people, may sound old and traditional but in fact they were written in the 1950s by Belfast musician and folk singer William McPeake.

One of the reasons the lyrics have such a traditional feel is because they were based on the words to an old Scottish song.

They are, however, sufficiently different for Wild Mountain Thyme/Will You Go Lassie Go to be considered an original work.

I will build my love a bower
By yon pure crystal fountain
And on it I will place
All the flowers of the mountain
Will you go, lassie, go?

If my true love she were gone
Then I’d surely find another
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin’ heather
Will you go, lassie, go?
